Once I read an advertisement in a newspaper from a graduate student who was studying the parasites of wasps asking for anyone who wanted a wasp nest removed to call him. After several weeks I thought of writing him to suggest he could get a papermaker to recycle the wasp nests into sheets of paper he could get his thesis printed on, but it was too late. His ad was gone and I couldn’t find his address any more. But I think it would be interesting to use wasp nests for a source.
I saw a book published in the late 1700s on making paper from other sources than rags, because the demand for paper was growing and growing, but the source wasn’t. They made paper out of various plant sources and included samples in the book, (e.g. potato paper) but they noted that the Canadian wasp makes paper out of wood, so people ought to be able to do it, too.
